LAUREN ROBERT

Lauren Robert is a professional actor, singer, songwriter and playwright. A former Epic Records recording artist, her original songs have been produced by Stephen Bray (The Color Purple, Madonna) and Robert Nemiroff (Raisin on Broadway). Lauren Robert is a professional actor, singer, songwriter and playwright. A former Epic Records recording artist, her original songs have been produced by Stephen Bray (The Color Purple, Madonna) and Robert Nemiroff (Raisin on Broadway). Lauren spent many years recording, and performing on the road at clubs, festivals and on national theatrical tours. For fourteen years, Lauren hailed as the lead singer of the wildly popular Louisiana Zydeco-funk band, Mojo Hand.


Her original musicals include the award-winning .22 Caliber Mouth, originally produced by The Bloomington Playwrights Project, and went on to win the Eugene O'Neill Center Development Prize  in 2004. Picked up by Premiers (NYC), her play with music was produced at The Ohio Theater in New York. 


In addition to the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Development Prize, Robert was awarded the Georgia Bogardus-Holof Lyricist Award in 2004 for .22 Caliber Mouth, and the Jerry Kaufman Award in 2013 for her short play, Other People’s Gardens. 


Lauren is a graduate of New York’s American Academy of Dramatic Arts, New York City Police Academy, and New York Institute for Group Process and Conflict Resolution. When she is not performing, she is a practicing counselor and life-coach, which she has been for over 25 years. 

 

PLAYWRIGHT ACTOR

As a playwright and actor, Lauren has performed off-Broadway and national theater tours. Her own musicals include .22-Caliber Mouth, Making It, The Blacksnake, and a short play, Other People’s Gardens.

A graduate of New York’s American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and member of the American Renaissance Theater Company and the Dramatist’s Guild, Lauren has played iconic roles such as Lady Macbeth, Martha (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf), Catherine (Ms. Reardon Drinks A little), Rizzo (Grease) and many others. She is the voice of “Moments in Congress” on NPR Radio and has numerous jingles and voice-overs on a variety of television and radio stations throughout the country.


22 Caliber Mouth

Originally produced by The Bloomington Playwrights Project, .22 Caliber Mouth went on to be developed in NY theater, and won the national development prize at The O’Neill Musical Theater Conference (2004), and the Georgia Bogardus-Holof Lyricist Award, for best lyrics in a musical. 


Lauren was offered a deal by Maureen Oxley, artistic Director of The Toronto Film Festival to produce .22 Caliber Mouth as a film. At the same time, PREMIERS, NYC., a theater company devoted to the development of new musical works by American writers, commissioned .22 Caliber Mouth as it's 2006 winter production under the direction of Tony Award winner, Diane Paulus (Porgy and Bess, Waitress, Pippin, The Donkey Show, Eli’s Comin’). It was also produced as a staged reading at The 45th Street Theater in New York City, with additional contributions from Broadway's Timothy Warman, and directed by John Henry Davis (HBO’s Oz). 


The off-Broadway limited-run production of .22 Caliber Mouth opened to sold- out houses at The Ohio Theater in New York’s Soho area.


Making It

Her first musical drama, Making It, was written in 1999. It was chosen by the John Waldron Arts Center in Bloomington, Indiana as their opening production of the 1999 season. Her second play, .22 Caliber Mouth, was selected as the fall 2003 season opener for The Bloomington Playwrights Project main stage, the first musical ever presented in the theater's history. 


Other original musicals by Lauren Robert include The Blacksnake, which won a performance in the American Renaissance Theater Company (ARTC) Spring Reading Series at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.

She has also performed at popular clubs in Paris, France. 


Lauren currently sings lead with the band Big Dog. For 14 years, Lauren hailed as the lead singer of the wildly popular Louisiana Zydeco-funk band, Mojo Hand – a swamp-rock band powered by her soulful voice.
